Mixed media is basically what interests me whether I am painting on a canvas or working with collage, sculpting with clay, or making assemblages of found objects.  Primitive art has been a major influence on my work as have weathered surfaces, ancient walls, and early frescos.  I have a passion for clay and the whole process of working with and firing the medium.  Fascinating to me are the surfaces that show the weathering of time, the layering of humanity, and the mysteries therein.

Artist’s Background
After receiving a BA in art history from Goucher in 1956, I studied painting with many artists through the years, the last of whom was Madeleine Sharrer of Guilford, CT.  In 1972, I began teaching painting and, in 1978, I built a studio on the side of my house in North Guilford.  Besides teaching classes and holding workshops in this studio, I shared the space with a group of painters, and it was this group that evolved into “The Other’s Arm”, a collaborative experiment in collage that has been and still is in full swing.

When I discovered clay on our property in 1995, I decided to work with this wonder medium.  I started taking ceramic workshops with Lisa Wolkow and was a studio apprentice at the Guilford Handcraft Center.  In 1997, I restored a 19th century barn on our property.  I built a clay studio on the lower lever and a showroom on the street level.  Three shows have taken place there since 2001.  I continue to work in all the above materials in my two studios in Guilford, CT.
