I am interested in learning through seeing. Carrying a camera creates a heightened awareness of the world, which I try to convert into images. My method of working is to keep my eyes and mind open to all possibilities. Some ideas come into my head and get worked out fairly methodically; other projects are extremely experiential and spontaneous. Currently I’m interested in working with the possibilities that the lens and shutter create in altering focus and showing movement. How do you create meaning? This question is a point of departure for me.
I generally work in series in order to develop an idea over time. It’s exciting to see in what direction the work leads, and it’s always unpredictable. Frederick Sommer said that we tend to like what we know, and we “never go to strange places [or] far country”, but my response is that we sure can if we start from familiar territory and move on.
