MEG BLOOM
I often create and use materials in ways that become metaphors for natural and unnatural processes. Three years ago I accidentally developed a method of working with fabrics, heat and wax, and have been continuing to make “accidents” happen ever since.
Among the work I have been making this year is a series of reliefs. The panels are constructed of cardboard that has been stripped, waxed, layered, and then burned, incorporating organic and synthetic materials, and pigment. I have used similar techniques and materials in making the smaller collages on paper and 3 dimensional sculpture.
As human beings we are forever observers and participants in processes of change. Sometimes that change is a transformation or regeneration emerging out of even the most devastating occurrences. At other times the process that takes place is from growth to deterioration.
Engagement with this transformation is the inspiration for the reliefs, and often for my work in general. The viewer is left to experience the work and to be in the moment of connection with the impermanence.
