JANE HARRIS
ARTIST'S STATEMENT
Working in a variety of media and grounds appeals to my sense of curiosity about what can happen as different materials affect each other. There is a sense of alchemy in experimenting with first one combination, then another, possibly inverting so that layers show through one another and a history of the work evolves.
I like to work with many varieties of paper, cloth, metal, clay and sheetrock, new and recycled. Using an etching press plus hand tools, these surfaces are painted, collaged, drawn on and dug into many times before a final work emerges.
I have no preconceived image to be developed. I might, however, start with an image, such as an old photograph or text or both and then transform it until it becomes a new image or series of images.
